George Herman Main, 86, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016, at the Hospice House with his family by his side. George was born November 20, 1929, to Herman and Velma (Pangborn) Main, in Flint, MI. George grew up in Flint, and graduated from the Flint Northern Institute. Following graduation, George began working as an engineer at General Motors parts supply for Fisher Body and Fisher Guide. George married his wife Betty (Plamondon) Main on October 31, 1952, at the First Presbyterian Church in Flint, MI.
George honorably served in the United States Navy.
Continuing his work with GM, in 1960 George and Betty moved to Yardley, PA. In 1965 to Birmingham, MI and 1972 to Rochester Hills, MI. George retired in 1986. In 1995 George and Betty moved to Traverse City where they enjoyed their time between TC and Naples, FL.
George enjoyed many outdoor activities, some of which included hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing, traveling, and boating. Together with his wife Betty, George cruised all the waters of the Great Lakes, the waters from Michigan to Florida, and the east coast from Florida to the St. Lawrence Seaway on their yacht The Bounding Main's. George and Betty traveled all the states, Alaska, and the Canadian Providence with their motor coach. Also traveled many European countries, the Greek Isle in the Mediterranean and several South Pacific Islands.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Main of Traverse City; daughters, Judy (Tim) Noonan, of Lake Orion, MI, Joy (Wally) Green of Traverse City, son, Jeffrey (Nikki) Main of Oxford, MI. Eight grandchildren; Jeffrey (Amy) Wichern and Andy (Danielle) Wichern, of Traverse City, Leslie (Brandon) Kelenske of Cedar, MI Tim (Jillian) Noonan of Grand Rapids, MI, Todd (Stephanie) Noonan of Berkley, MI, Trevor (Haley) Noonan of Shelby Twp, MI, Elizabeth Main of South Bend, IN, Katie (Matt) London of Lake Orion, MI and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Leslie (LaVern) Main of Rapid City, MI, sisters; Loraine Diebel of Kalkaska, MI, Beverly Siefried of Grand Blanc, MI, Marialice Ferguson of Davison, and many nieces and nephews.
George is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Velma, and brother Robert Main.
Past member of; Society Die Cast Engineers and Society Plastic Engineers. George was also a member of the American Legion.
A memorial service is planned for late Spring.
