Obituary

George W. Phillips, 94, of Traverse City, died peacefully surrounded by family on February 11, 2017.
George was born April 10, 1922 to the late George W. and Marie (Arlt) in Muskegon, MI.
Growing up in rural Grand Traverse County near Summit City George became the man of the house at an early age, tending for his siblings and seeing that the chores were all done. It was this time that he began his lifelong skill of being the provider. He learned to drive at 6 and became the successful hunter of the family putting food on the table. During the winter months, he would arrive early at school to stoke the fire earning a nickel a week to keep the school house warm.
He was the most compassionate man you could meet. He always put the needs of others before his own and never failed to assist others to the best of his ability. He honored a handshake like a contract and was a friend to all he met.
He married Joan Marie Breithaupt and after 69 years they were every bit in love as they were on June 1, 1947 as they said I do at the First Christian Church of Traverse City.
George bravely served in the US Army in WWII at the Battle of the Bulge and across Europe. He served in the Army Reserves after the war.
He was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church for many years.
He owned his own business in TV sales and service, starting it from the ground up in his living room.
George was a brave and loyal soldier as well as a patient and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived and missed dearly by his wife, his children; David (Shelley), Sharon (Thomas), Daniel (Jody), Thomas (Laura), Timothy and Mark (Catherine), his sister Marvel, 12 grandchildren and 14.5 great grandchildren.
George is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters; Teeda, Amalita, Paloma, Rose, Marjorie, June and Creda, and a brother George.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday February 22nd from 5pm to 8 pm at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday February 23rd at 1pm at The Trinity Lutheran Church with visiting one hour prior. Pastor Zagore will be officiating.
