George Edward Stevens, 82, of Traverse City passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Munson Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
George was born on May 13, 1936 to the late Ed and Eva (Winters) Stevens in Kane, IL. He graduated from Jacksonville (Illinois) High School and attended Western Illinois College. Later he would earn his associates degree from NMC in Traverse City.
A sales associate for the Burroughs Corporation for many years, he later worked as an equity and timing investment broker, serving a number of clients over the years. George was an avid golfer, having made three holes in one over the years and, along with his wife Ann, were members of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. He also loved boating and fishing. George and Ann enjoyed these activities together and spent their winters at The Villages in Florida.
George is survived by his wife, the former Ann E. Orebaugh whom he married on July 1, 1978 at a ceremony officiated by The Rev. Dr. Howard Towne at First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Also surviving are his children, Todd (Marie) Stevens of Bessemer City, N.C., Kelli (Mike) Poortenga of Colon; Ann's children, Bob (Sandy) Gleason of Texas,
Shelley (William) Krieg of Franklin; his grandchildren, Brandon and Kyle Poortenga, Lauren (Jacob) Gleason, Alexander (Hanna) Krieg, Yokohama, Japan, Katrina (Jevrem) Cadenovic, Christopher Krieg and William Krieg along with his great grandchildren Aiden and Anastasija Grace. George is also survived by his sisters Barbara Gonzales and Keota Shouse, both of Jacksonville, IL. George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Christina Smith and Russell Stevens.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 in the Towne Chapel of First Congregational Church with The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. There will be a viewing prior to the service at 10 a.m., also at the church. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in the spring.
