George Fred Wackenhut, 91, of Milford Township, and formerly of Traverse City passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at West Hickory Haven Nursing Home.
George was born on Wednesday, September 16, 1925 to George and Mabel (Becker) Wackenhut in Detroit, MI. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and served time in India. After the war he was employed as a brick mason in the Detroit area for many years. He married Betty Bush and moved to Traverse City in 1955 and began working at Arnold and Tezak Construction, first as a mason and then as an estimator. After his retirement, he worked part time for Federal Armor Company for 8 years.
George will be remembered for his gentle, quiet demeanor. He was kind hearted and never was one to become upset or raise his voice. George was Betty's rock, he calmed her. He loved to swim and fish in Silver Lake and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
George is survived by his daughter Judy (Terry) Tengdin; sister Evelyn Kean; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty (Bush) Wackenhut; parents George and Mabel (Becker) Wackenhut; sisters Marilyn Trailor and Dorothy Morey.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 2 p.m. Tim Moeggenberg will officiate services.
