George William Wertman, 79, passed away on October 8, 2026. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 24, 1947, the son of John and Helen (nee Glasser) Wertman.
George spent his professional life in sales, working for Keebler, Jay’s Potato Chips and Grand Traverse Distillery. Throughout his life, George dedicated countless hours to the communities he loved, starting young by serving in the National Guard. He then went on to be a Mason and a member of the Eastern Star, and also served at the Presbyterian Church when health and time allowed.
For nearly 40 years, George volunteered his time at the National Cherry Festival, serving as their President in 2004. His commitment to the festival and the entire community reflected his willingness to give of his time, heart, and energy to the people and traditions he valued.
Outside of his work and volunteer activities, George enjoyed reading, good music and traveling. He loved animals and spent much time with dogs, cats, and llamas. George gave much time to being a caregiver for his wife Kay.
George was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Wertman, wife Lynn, wife Kay and brother John. He will be remembered by his significant other, Kathleen Muench, his children Kelly (Sean) Connery, Matthew (Lauren) Wertman, Mark (Beth) Wertman and his stepson, Kent (Rebecca) Tillett. He leaves behind grandchildren Graham, Cora, Meredith, Olivia and Andrew Wertman and Alexandra and EJ Tillitt. He will also be remembered by his Cherry Festival Queen Kelly Plucinski and the best neighbors in the world who he loved and considered family.
A funeral service to honor George will take place at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City on November 7, 2026. The family will receive visitors from 10:30-11:45, with the service at noon. His ashes will be placed in the church Prayer Garden.
