ELK RAPIDS — George M. Zagar, 92, of Elk Rapids, previously of Ypsilanti and Painsdale, died Thursday, May 12, 2011. He was born April 10, 1919, in Painsdale to Thomas and Rose (Butina) Zagar. George enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served four years during World War II in the 7th Armored Division under General Patton and General Bradley. He married the late Edith Elizabeth Kemppainen on March 20, 1948, in Hancock. George worked for Ford Motor Company at the Ford-Wixom Plant as a driver repairman for over 30 years. After retirement George and Edith moved to Elk Rapids in 1980. George enjoyed fishing, gardening, the outdoors and was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers.George is survived by his daughters, Christine (Rod) Hosman, of Northville, and Marilyn (Jay) King, of Farmington; grandchildren, Marcus (Melissa) Hosman, Kristopher (Joy) King and Carrie Hosman; four great-grandchildren, Megan, Emily, Ryan and Daniella; and many nieces and nephews.Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; three brothers, John, Joe and Matt; and one sister, Ann.Memorial services will be held today, May 14, 2011, at 3 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids.
