Glenn F. Aylsworth, 92, of Traverse City and formerly of Empire died Friday, October 6, 2017
Glenn was born on Friday, November 14, 1924 to the late Alonzo and Gladys (Purdy) Aylsworth in Empire. He attended Empire schools, continuing his education at Ferris State (College) University, earning his teaching degree and later earning his juris doctor degree from the Detroit College of Law.
Glenn served our country as a member of the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II, having attained the rank of Sergeant prior to his discharge.
After earning his teaching degree , Glenn taught school in Lincoln Park and later in Ellsworth. He then began his career as an attorney. In the fall of 1955, Glenn was appointed the Public Administrator for Leelanau County by Gov. G. Mennen Williams. He became the Probate Judge of Leelanau County in 1956 and from 1956 until 1972, he was the Prosecuting Attorney for the County as well. He continued private practice in Traverse City until 2001. Glenn has been a member of the Michigan Bar Association for over 50 years, a former member of the American Bar Association, the Leelanau-Grand Traverse-Antrim Bar Association and the Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He is a life time member of the Empire United Methodist Church, The Empire Masonic Lodge F & AM 597, was past president in 1976 and 1986 of the Shriners and was a three time Shriner of the Year recipient. Glenn has been a life member and past president of the Leelanau Prospectors Club, a past president and 60+ year member of the Empire Lions Club, a member of the Traverse City Elks Lodge for over 50 years, served as Superintendent of Empire Schools prior to consolidation into Glen Lake Schools and was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America.
Surviving Glenn is his wife Janice J. (Gohlke) Aylsworth of Traverse City; his children G. Thomas (Kathy) Aylsworth of Glen Arbor, stepson Michael (Sara) Carpenter of Interlochen, stepdaughter Melissa (Doug) LaBelle of Charlevoix, 17 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Gladys Hentschel, sons, Gregory and Warren Aylsworth; great-granddaughter, Grace Aylsworth; brothers, Wayne, George and Warren and sister Helen Scully
Visitation for Glenn will take place from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Empire United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
Memorial contributions may be directed to The Traverse City Shrine Club to benefit crippled children or to the Empire United Methodist Church.
