TRAVERSE CITY — Glenn Goris, 86, of Empire and formerly of Alliance, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, with his children at his side.Glenn was born on Aug. 30, 1923, to the late Clarence and Suzan (Bylsma) Goris in Alliance, Ohio. He was a 1944 graduate of Mount Union College in Alliance and married the former Eleanor "Jean" Rhodes on July 20, 1944. Glenn enlisted in the U.S. Naval Ensign School and graduated with a rank of Lieutenant J.G. (Junior Grade). In September of 1944 he picked up his ship LST #940 in Boston. In the Pacific Theater his ship earned battle stars for two invasions, Iwo Jima in February 1945 and Okinawa in April 1945. Glenn was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.He returned home to Alliance and to his wife, Jean. Glenn started his own independent insurance office, the Glenn Goris Agency. His son, Bradley, joined him in 1976, and together they later added a real estate development company. Glenn retired in 1990. Throughout his life, he was active in his community and in his church, most recently as a member of the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church. Glenn had been a seasonal visitor to Glen Lake since 1963 and moved there permanently with his wife, Jean in 1990.Glenn is survived by his sons, Gregory (Cynthia) Goris, of Commerce Township, and Bradley (Suzan) Goris, of Alliance, Ohio; his daughter, Greta (Westbrook) Walker, of Kentwood; and grandchildren, Brian and Kelly Goris, and Jared and Jordan Walker. He will also be missed by his special friend, Jane Maatman, of Glen Lake.Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Jean on March 16, 2002; and his sister, Joy.Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, with the Rev.
