Harry Gene Zeeryp, 93, of Traverse City, died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Lakeview Assisted Living near Maple City.
Harry was born on Sunday, April 6, 1924 to the late Harry and Agnes (Whitlock) Zeeryp in Grand Rapids. He graduated from high school, and then continued his education at Ferris State where he earned his BA in accounting. As a young man, Harry worked with the CCC in the State of Washington. He served our country as a member of the U. S. Army, serving in Burma as a medic and when discharged had earned the rank of Corporal. He married the former Betty Lorraine Mercer on August 16, 1948 in Grand Rapids. Harry and Betty moved to Traverse City in 1954 after moving to Kingsley from Grand Rapids. He was employed by the City of Traverse City from 1966 until 1990, retiring as city treasurer. He enjoyed photography, collecting guns, coins and stamps, was an avid reader, and especially liked being out doors, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping.
Harry is survived by his children Deborah (Chuck) Johnson of Alexandria, VA, Frances (Bob) Hashek of Milwaukee, WI, Stephen (Rebecca) Zeeryp of Virginia Beach, VA, Teresa Marquez of Yukon, OK, Janet (Eric) Malone of Grass Valley, CA, Mary (Greg) Peel , Natasha Morse , Joel (Diana) Zeeryp all of Traverse City; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Dave (Lynn) Zeeryp of Arcadia, Wayne Zeeryp of Benton Harbor, Sue Zeeryp and Karen Zeeryp of Grand Rapids, and Mary Zeeryp of Sand Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, and a sister Audrey Kendall.
The family would like to thank Virginia and David Martz for the wonderful care they provided Harry over the last several years while he made his home at Lakeview Assisted Living.
Visitation for Harry will take place this evening, Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home Thursday, June 1 at 11a.m. Entombment will be in the Oakwood Catholic Mausoleum.
