Helen Teresa Oklat

Helen Teresa Oklat, lovingly known as "Babcia," 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Yorkshire Manor in Traverse City.

Helen was born on August 18, 1929 to Jozef and Wladyslawa in Janow Lubelski, Poland. She immigrated to the United States and married her husband Joseph Oklat in 1947. Together, they had one son, Henry.
Babcia was very proud of her Polish heritage and had amazing childhood stories regarding her life in Poland. She immigrated to the United States speaking only Polish and it was through her various clerical jobs that she taught herself English.

Her grandchildren and great grandchildren remember Babcia as an avid baker and soup maker. No one left her table hungry. Babcia found great joy in carrying on her Polish traditions with her family and she loved spending time outside of her home on the St. Mary's River. She loved animals, especially dogs and the neighborhood dogs would visit her frequently for her special treats.

Helen is survived by her daughter-in law Martha Oklat, grandson Stephen (Kandra) Oklat, granddaughter Kristin (Trever) Tynon and great grandchildren Gracie, Emma, Griffin and Amelia. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and her beloved son.

A funeral service honoring Helen will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:30 a.m., with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie. Rev. Allen P. Mott will officiate and a small celebration of life will take place immediately following the service. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights.

In remembrance of Helen's life, her family asks that any charitable donations be made to Hospice of Michigan. Helen's family would like to thank Hospice of Michigan and the staff at Yorkshire Manor, specifically Robanne and Ashley for the amazing care and compassion they provided Helen over the past several months. In addition, the family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Terry Patzwald for all of the help and support he provided to Helen and her family throughout the years.
