Herbert Mansfield, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday December 4, 2020 at Traverse Manor Assisted Living after battling Covid-19.
Herb was born October 4, 1928 to the late Wayne and Ida May (Johnson) Mansfield on the family farm in Morenci, MI. He was a graduate of Morenci High School. After graduation, Herb married the love of his life and best friend Evelyn May (Porter) on August 16, 1947 in Morenci. Together they raised a loving family on their crop and dairy farm in Lenawee County, raising dairy and beef cattle and eventually just crop farming before retiring. During his farming days, he would tend to the needs of the cattle and crops and take a break long enough to drive school bus for the Morenci Area School.
For 38 years, Herbert and Evelyn enjoyed their winters in Leesburg, Florida where they were very involved in the Holiday Mission Church. After arriving back home to Michigan, it didn't take long for Herbert to have the truck packed back up ready for another traveling adventure.
Herbert is survived by a son and two daughters; Thomas (Donna) Mansfield of Traverse City, MI, Carol (Marv) Studinger of Traverse City, MI and Emilie (Mike) Calvert of Broken Arrow, OK and a daughter-in-law, Susie Mansfield of Newaygo, MI. Also surviving are grandchildren; Brook (Bill) Yeager of Windermere, FL, Aaron (Lori) Mansfield of Traverse City, MI, Abigail (Aaron) Shier of Fort Mill, SC, Lindsey (Gym) Hinderer of St. Louis, MO, Amber (Steve) Yarber of Charlotte, NC, Major Luke (Andrea) Calvert of Parker, CO, Bree Gail (Brandon) Stuk of Jenison, MI, Corinn (Nick) Kowalski of Traverse City, MI, Dr. Bryton (Jillian) Mansfield of Grand Rapids, MI and SPC Seth (Amy) Calvert of Broken Arrow, OK. He is also survived by great-grandchildren; Cameron and Boden Mansfield, Will Yeager, Judson, Julia and Adeline Stuk, Nola, Bronson, Brecht and Lakeland Mansfield, Lincoln, Alexis and Raelynn Shier, Will and Hank Hinderer, Porter, Weston, Elliott, Lilli, Hudson and Genevieve Kowalski, Anniston Yarber and Olivia and Penelope Calvert, his sister Maureen Mansfield-Smith, sister-in-law Margaret Porter, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his beloved bride, a son, Brad Mansfield, a grandson, Bronson Mansfield, a granddaughter, Shannon Brook Suydam, sister Eva Marie Beck Boydston, brother Nored Mansfield, sister-in-law Merle Mansfield-Speiser, his parents Wayne and Ida as well as a son-in-law, Robert Suydam.
A memorial service honoring Herbert's life will take place at a later date.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to Hospice of Michigan or Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse.
The family wishes to send a huge heartfelt thank you to the Munson Medical Center ICU Covid Unit for caring for Herbert. "To all the doctors, nurses, assistants and case managers that cared for Herbert, Thank you." The family would also like to thank the Traverse Manor staff and caregivers for an amazing 7 years and to Dr. Derek Rice and staff for great dental care.
The family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
