Hugo Trepte, 76, of Traverse City died on March 15, 2015, at Munson Medical Center following a sudden illness. Hugo always lived life to the fullest, seeking adventures and savoring new experiences.
He was born on March 1, 1939, in Dresden, Germany, to Clarabel and Helmut Trepte. As a child he experienced wartime shortages which may explain his reluctance later in life to part with seemingly unnecessary items and his willingness to eat just about anything. After the war the Treptes settled in Michigan, where Hugo lived the rest of his life.
Hugo taught math at the Interlochen Arts Academy for thirty years and is remembered by his students for his patience in making certain everyone really understood the concepts. In his classroom it was cool to like math, and he took particular pride in his ability to inspire students for whom math was not a passion. Many students also remember Hugo for the adventurous backpacking trips he led.
As well as a gifted teacher, Hugo was an avid Laser sailor, an outdoorsman, a builder, an intense gamer, and a ballroom dance enthusiast. He will be remembered for his entertaining stories and his propensity to ask probing questions.
Hugo is survived by his children Kai, Anina, and Forrest; his grandchildren Eli, Leo, and Jaan; his siblings Stu and Margie; his former wife and life-long friend Jocelyn; and his constant companion, Max the dog. His family will gather this summer, in his favorite place, "Dingle Hill" overlooking Intermediate Lake.
