Ida Marie Hanell

November 9, 1916 — May 14, 2020

Ida Marie Hanell, 103, of Traverse City passed away peacefully with her family by her side on May 14, 2020 at Samaritas Senior Living.

Ida was born on November 9, 1916 in Traverse City. She was the daughter of Jesse A. Forton and Grace (Malloy) Forton.

Ida enjoyed reading, bingo and watching her birds. The first Robin was a welcome sign of spring and yellow finches, and cardinals were two of her favorite birds to watch. In her younger years she was part of the altar society at St. Francis, volunteering for many of the funeral luncheons and also at Father Fred. Sunday morning get togethers for donuts were one of her highlights. She adored her grandchildren and was a huge part of their lives, still babysitting into her eighties. She enjoyed her many trips to Beaver Island reconnecting with her family from there the Malloys. One of her fondest memories included a trip to Finland where she and her husband Vike visited his ancestors homeland, and spent time with them. She loved her Moomers vanilla ice cream, and loved to go on her birthday where she got paid to eat her ice cream. She was spunky and not afraid to speak her mind. She will be greatly missed.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband M. Vike, daughter Marilyn Achard grandson Aryl Dailey, great grandson Traison Achard; siblings Maxine Mullen, Magaret Courtade, Audrey Maison, Evelyn Wysocki, Phillip Forton and Stephen Forton.
Ida is survived by her daughters Sandra (Frank) Steiner, Beverly (Gary) Van Raalte; son-in-law James Achard; grandchildren Timothy (Vicki) Achard, Tammy (Jim) Horn, Heather Dailey, Troy (Jill) Achard, Lydia (Phillip) Elya, Annika (Isaac) Richardson; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Francis Catholic Church. The family will also greet friends and family at Bev and Gary's residence in an outdoor celebration following the mass and interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
