Obituary

Jack Stanley Smith, 72, of Traverse City, and Fort Myers, FL., passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018 in Fort Myers, with his family by his side.
Jack was born September 12, 1946 in Lansing, MI to Jack and Florence (Harootian) Smith and moved to Traverse City at the age of 4. After High School Jack honorably served our Country in the United States Navy.
He married Gail Martha Gustafson on October 25, 1969 in Traverse City. Together they lovingly raised two wonderful children, Jason and Kendra.
Jack obtained his builders license in Ann Arbor where he owned Sherlock Holmes Ltd. and began a career in construction. Subsequently owning J & J Builders as well.
After moving back to Traverse City in 1978 Jack went into Real-Estate and Construction Management for Oleson's Food Stores. He was an active member of the community, he dedicated many years to the NMC College BBQ, was a licensed realtor, member of the Traverse City Rotary Club, The Elk's Lodge #323, and the Presbyterian Church. "Uncle Jack" devoted 40 years to The National Cherry Festival, serving as a volunteer, he was President in 1989, and most recently Director of Operations.
In his spare time Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, taking the grandkids for rides on the golf cart, and spending time with family.
Surviving Jack is his devoted wife of 49 years, Gail; his mother Florence Johnson; his son Jason (Kasie) Smith of Ada, his daughter Kendra (William) Balderach; grandchildren; Jackson, Spencer, Cooper, Oliver, Cy and Lucy; brother Kerry (Leslie) Smith of Charlevoix; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends and neighbors.
Jack is preceded in death by his father Jack, brother Rick Smith, and step-father Carl Johnson.
A brief Funeral service will be held Friday, May 10th at 5:30 pm at Reynold's-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with visitation following until 8:00 pm. A Celebration of life will take place Saturday, May 11th from 1:00-3:30 pm at Boone's Long Lake Inn. Memorials may be directed to: The Long Lake Foundation (Fishing and Loon Preservation), The Oleson Foundation, or the Cherryland Humane Society. Burial has taken place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
