James "Jim" C. Anderson, 67, of Traverse City, passed away quietly April 1, 2019 at Munson Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Jim was born in Traverse City, at Munson Hospital to parents John and Alvina (Miller) Anderson. He grew up in Kewadin and attended Elk Rapids School. He was very active in his high school sports which he loved.
After graduation he went on to attend college in Kansas at Haskell Indian College, which was attended by Native American across the country. He was a straight "A" student in his trade of choice, auto mechanics. He also played football and tennis the two years he was there. It was in college he met his wife to be, Iva Williams from Arizona. They married in California and spent the next 48 years together raising a family in the Traverse City Area.
Jim hired into Consumers Power in the summer of 1972 and worked there for 38 years. He was hired-in as summer help in the garage, and then tree trimming. He tried being a lineman, but preferred the tree trimming work. Later he took a position handling substation maintenance. He always came home with a funny story to tell about his workday. He truly enjoyed his years with Consumers.
Jim was a proud member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
He is survived by his wife Iva; children Tina (Joseph) Vaclavik, Jason, and Spring; grandchildren Dennis Smith III (Holly), Kaytlin Smith, and Christopher Smith; great-grandchildren Bralen and Ezra; mother Alvina; sister Jenny (Marty) Baker; and brothers Jacob, Jonathan and Randy (Deb) Miller.
Jim was preceded in death by his father John and brothers Robert, John Eric, Jeffrey and Tom; and half-sister Brenda.
A memorial service honoring Jim will take place 3PM, Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Family and friends will be received from 2PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
