James Joseph Hayes, 80, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Jim was born on September 9, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late John James and Irene Elizabeth (Pappenfus) Hayes. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1962 and continued his education at Central Michigan University, where he earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Psychology.
Jim moved to Traverse City in the early 1970s to begin his career at the Traverse City State Hospital. After its closing, he continued his work at the State Hospital in Caro, Michigan. Ultimately, Jim returned to Traverse City, where he worked alongside his sons and dedicated time to his loved ones.
When Jim wasn't working, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to his family. He was a constant presence in his grandchildren's lives, attending their every sporting event, taking them on trips, and always bolstering their developing skills and interests. He regularly helped drive his grandchildren to and from school, practice, and wherever else they needed to be, and he cherished the quality time spent with them. Jim was a positive force in the lives of many; he worked hard to provide his loved ones with the tools they needed to be successful, his tutelage was deeply appreciated and his influence will long be felt.
Jim is survived by his sons, Michael Hayes and John Hayes; grandchildren, Connor (Shelby) Hayes, Ryan Hayes, and Holly Hayes; and his nephew, Kevin Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John C. Hayes.
Per Jim's wishes, private family services will take place. Kindly share thoughts and memories with his family at
