Obituary

James J. Manley, Sr. "Big Jim", 94, of Williamsburg, passed away on Sep. 14, 2023, at his home on hospice. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Thomas and Mildred (Rice) Manley on August 6, 1929.

Jim grew up on a farm in Shepherd, and later Scottville, Michigan. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy.

Jim worked at Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. as a field supervisor and retired in 1992 after 42 years of service. He was known for being the "go-to guy" for all trouble-shooting issues on the job. He enjoyed recalling many stories from his line of work to family and any nearby listeners.

Jim and Jo Anne retired to the shores of East Grand Traverse Bay and found joy in their peaceful environment with regular visits from family.

Jim is survived by his daughters and sons; Jean (Steve) Stanicki, Barbara Manley, Patrick (Debbie) Manley, Michael Manley, five grandchildren, Brennan (Michelle) Manley, Gregory (Coty) Manley, Ryan Manley, Cira Washkevich, Aleah Manley, and two great-grandsons, Griffin and Soren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, JoAnne (deManigold), his son, James J. Manley, Jr., grandson, Devon Washkevich, and his brother, Thomas Manley and sister, Margaret.
Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His humor, big laugh, storytelling and kindness will be remembered fondly.

A memorial service honoring James will take place at 11:00 a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City, Michigan 49684. Burial of his cremated remains will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
