James Edward Kirby, 81, of Lake Leelanau, and formerly of Swartz Creek, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
James was born on November 7, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Edward and Clara (Bachman) Kirby. After graduating from high school, he began his lifelong career with Frito-Lay, where he worked as a route salesman.
On September 14, 1963, James married Sharon A. Baryo. Together they raised two wonderful daughters, Lynnette and Danielle.
In his early years at Frito-Lay, James would often bring his route truck home for the next day's deliveries and treat himself to a fresh, cold bag of chips, his favorite way to enjoy them. He enjoyed his job and was dedicated to his customers before retiring in 1998.
After retirement, James and Sharon moved to Lake Leelanau, where he enjoyed boating, especially the thrill of speeding across the water with an ice-cold Michelob in hand. As the years went by and he aged, he traded his Cruise Boat for a Pontoon, but his love for the lake and peaceful evening cruises never faded.
James enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune every night and was a passionate football fan, known for enthusiastically "coaching" from his favorite chair. He cherished time spent with family and friends, always bringing laughter and good conversation to any gathering.
After Sharon's passing in 2007, James missed her deeply and spoke of her often.
James is survived by his daughters Lynnette (Bill) Leader and Danielle (Andy)Holman; and his beloved granddaughters Madison and Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon, and his brother Richard (2023).
Cremation has taken place. The family will announce a celebration of life at the lake in spring or summer of 2026. Memorial contributions in his honor may be directed to
