Traverse City – James Russell LaFaive, 83, of Traverse City passed away on March 4, 2024, at his home.

James was born on November 14, 1940, in Detroit to the late Earl Henry and Elizabeth Jane (Ryder) LaFaive.

James spent his childhood in Detroit and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1959.

In November of 1961 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served for two years, some of which was spent in Germany and was honorably discharged in November of 1963.

When he returned home from his time in the service, he met a beautiful young lady who would soon become the love of his life. On April 15, 1966, he married the former Yvonne Cecile Guay.

James worked in logistics for Chef Pierre in Traverse City, followed by time at Nutra Sweet in Chicago. He then went on to Food Brands in Kansas City and eventually ended up back in Traverse City at Cherry Growers. He retired for the first time at the age of 69. He then went back to work for BATA, a job that he loved very much.

In his free time, he enjoyed watching his grandkids pursue their music, artistic and sports-related interests. He enjoyed watching golf and the Red Wings and was known to enjoy a fine Manhattan from time to time. He also loved visits to Turtle Creek Casino and playing cards. In his early years, he also liked to ice skate, play racquet ball and tennis, swim, downhill and water ski and ride his bike to his favorite music.

James was preceded in death by his brother Richard.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne; their children Michael (Gessica), Donald (Tammy) and Carrie Douglass; grandchildren James, Thomas, Lily, Andrew, Jackson, Brady and Charlie; brothers Thomas, Cecil (Kathy) and Donald (Sandy); sister Sharon Jermanus; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in his honor may be directed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Cherryland Humane Society.
