Obituary

James "Jim" Nelson Gray, 81, of Traverse City passed away Thursday, October 31, 2024 at his home.

Jim was born on April 18, 1943, in Three Rivers, Michigan, to Vern and Alma (Nelson) Gray. Shortly after his birth, the family relocated to the Old Mission Peninsula, where his father worked for Montgomery Ward. Jim enjoyed a vibrant childhood, filled with days spent playing in and farming the fields, as well as tending to the livestock. As he grew older, Jim found a passion for adventure, often riding his Indian motorcycle across the Peninsula, embracing the freedom and beauty of Northern Michigan.

Jim graduated from Traverse City High School as a member of the Class of 1961. During his high school years, he developed a lifelong passion for learning, fostered by a gifted math teacher, whom he always remembered fondly, at Northwestern Michigan College. Jim went on to attend Western Michigan University before transferring to Michigan Technological University, where he graduated with honors in electrical engineering, later earning the highest score in Michigan on the Professional Engineering Examination. Known for his sharp intellect, Jim enjoyed learning throughout his life.

After college, Jim returned to Traverse City to care for his mother and tend to the family farm. It was during this time he met his future wife, Elizabeth "Becky" Anne Gilbert, a former teacher at Central Junior High, while both were working for Consumers Power. The two married in 1973 and shared a devoted marriage, raising a daughter, Christina, of whom he was incredibly proud. Jim worked for many years at Consumers Power, where his dedication and hard work led him to become the Superintendent of the Northern Region, a role he held until his retirement in 1999.

In his retirement, Jim embraced his love for the land, spending countless hours caring for the farm, the yard, and the home. He and the family enjoyed spending winters in Longboat Key and Sarasota, Florida, and exploring Northern Michigan's natural beauty and local food scene. A true "foodie," Jim delighted in dining out and discovering new restaurants and recipes, especially those that originated from his Swedish heritage. His passion for cars was a lifelong joy, especially his prized red 1970 Oldsmobile convertible with a white top, which he proudly showcased in many National Cherry Festival parades.

Jim was dearly loved by his family and friends, and his warmth, intelligence, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Becky; his cherished daughter, Christina; his loyal cat, George; and his new puppy, Ollie.

Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce, and his parents, Vern and Alma.

Jim's memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
