Obituary

James Schierbeek, better known as Jim, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023.

Jim was born on October 29, 1931 to the late Herman and Winifred Schierbeek.

Jim served in the United States Army and was a light weapons instructor at Fort Riley, Kansas. After his honorable discharge be resumed working with his father as a carpenter building houses in Grand Rapids, Mi. When his father passed away he began working for R.D. Brooks Builders. He transferred to Traverse City with them when they opened a new branch here. When they closed their doors here, Jim went to Lansing and got his builders license and started James Schierbeek Builders. He decided to go out of business for himself, but kept working into his 70s with Crystal River Corporation in Glen Arbor. Jim was a master craftsman. Perfection was his purpose in his craft and his life. He lived with joy and integrity in everything he did. Family and friendships were very important to him.

Flying was the ultimate hobby. Jim earned his private pilots license before moving to Traverse City. From landings to cross country flights, to quick trips up to see the colors, he loved to be in flight. Friends made at the airport were also very special to him.

Jim is survived by his dear wife Linda Wolgast. Throughout their life together they enjoyed many things including traveling extensively throughout the United States. They also went to Mexico, Jamaica, Italy and Canada. Their experiences were an important part of their life together.

Jim was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery where he received honors from the VFW Post, American Legion and was paid loving respects by Pastor Linda Stephan of Central United Methodist and many dear friends.

Pastor Linda shared that: We come together
to remember before God the life of Jim Schierbeek.
Most beloved husband to Linda – the man who gave her the beautiful family she didn't even know she needed –

Wonderful father, to:
Michael, Jefferson, Michelle, Jamie, and Michael.
Grandfather, and Great-grandfather…and brother and uncle.

A man with many friends in many walks of life.
A maker with incredible skill (who built beautiful spaces for himself and Linda .
And a person who'd always rather be flying!

Jim was a maker with incredible talent, building everything from furniture to kitchens and houses. To the delight of his clients, and to Linda, he was skilled at function and beauty and he made their house a home. He had friends from many walks of life, and Jim and Linda were blessed to be hosted by friends on some wonderful and elaborate adventures in the course of their life together. He never owned a plane, but he had his pilot's license and, no matter what he was doing, he would always rather be flying. His closest friends also attest that he was never happier than when he was speaking of his children.

Jim will live of in the hearts of many, especially his family who loved him dearly.
