James Denis Sullivan, age 73, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away on September 13, 2026, at Munson Medical Center. Throughout his health battles, Jim remained steadfast and never complained, meeting each day with the same sweet, kind, and dependable spirit that defined his life.
Jim was born in Flint, Michigan, on April 16,1953. He became a member of the first graduating class of Powers Catholic High School in 1971. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics from Northwestern Michigan College. Jim was admired for his leadership qualities, intelligence, tenacity, and extensive knowledge of history.
Jim dedicated 25 years of his working life to TV 7&4 as Production Manager, where he developed many memorable advertising campaigns. Alongside his career in television, he operated the family farm market, “Cherry Capital Farms”, the longest-tenured fresh fruit market on the Old Mission Peninsula.
On September 6, 1975, he married Shirley Elizabeth Cosgrove at Ogdensburg United Methodist Church. Their 51 years together were a cherished and fulfilling part of his life. Family was always at the center of their life together. Their two children, Dennis and Courtney, are deeply loved and brought them immeasurable joy and enrichment throughout their lives.
Jim found happiness in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life. A devoted sports fan, he enthusiastically followed the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and University of Michigan. He enjoyed tending to his Koi fish pond, spending time outdoors, and creating meaningful memories with his grandchildren.
Jim never gave up. Even in his final days, his strength and generosity remained evident. As an organ donor, he left behind the gift of life so that someone else might have the opportunity to live on.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Shirley; their children, Dennis (Jenny Hall) Sullivan and Courtney (Alan) Kierczynski; grandchildren, Calli, Natalia, Elizabeth, Jack, and Adam; great-grandchildren, Maddox, Kayson, and Hazel; and his siblings, Joe (Mary Lou) Sullivan, Jane Nickola, Joanne Levi, Judy Edwards, John L. Sullivan (Beth Hadjis), and Joyce Sullivan. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews who will carry his memory with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Norma Sullivan; stepmother, Mary Sullivan; parents-in-law, James and Kathleen Cosgrove; and brothers-in-law, James Cosgrove, Steven Cosgrove, Shawn Keane, Dale Nickola, and Michael Edwards.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Munson Medical Center for their compassionate care, kindness, and support during Jim’s final days.
