Jane L. Lewis
Lifelong Traverse City resident, Jane L. Lewis, 99, passed away on Tuesday, April22, 2014, at Traverse Manor Assisted Living Facility. She was the oldest of six children born to Harry and Hazel (Geyer a/k/a Gier) Lyon. She was born in a private home on 6th Street in Traverse City on March 28, 1915.
Jane graduated from Traverse City High School in 1934. She then took a business course at Ferris Institute. Following completion of her education, Jane worked for the Michigan Public Service Commission in Lansing. Eventually, she returned to Traverse City to be close to her family. For thirty years she served as a Clerk for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration office in Traverse City.
As a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, she enjoyed Bible study courses and working in the thrift shop. She also enjoyed gardening, socializing with her sewing club and her sisters, and keeping up with current events.
Jane is survived by her sons, Michael D. Lewis (Beverly) of Traverse City, and Kenneth W. Lewis (Patricia) of Fountain, grandchildren, Lori Siegel of Washington, D.C., Eric Lewis of Florida, Mary Beth Forester of Eagan, MN, Dr. Leigh Lewis of Traverse City, Christopher and Steven Lewis of Fountain, and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Charlotte Carr, Arwilda Lyon, and her brother, Harry Lyon, Jr., all of Traverse City, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Leonard G. Lyon and Kenneth William
Lyon, and her grandsons, infant David Wayne Lewis and Jason Michael Lewis.
The family appreciates and thanks Traverse Manor for the loving care she received during the final years of her life.
Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, 6105 Center Road, Traverse City, MI 49686 on Tuesday, April29, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, April28, 2014, at Reynolds Johnkoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the First Congregational Church in her name.
