Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Jane Elizabeth White Nelson, 90, of Lake Ann, died Monday morning, Nov. 29, 2010, at Munson Hospice House. Born May 15, 1920, in Lake Ann, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. and Laura R. (Petersen) White. Raised in Kingsport, Tenn., Jane returned to her native village of Lake Ann in 1940, where she became very involved in her community. She served as an organist for Lake Ann United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years, which she thoroughly enjoyed, serving God through her music.On Jan. 1, 1983, she retired from Traverse City State Hospital, where she worked as a Medical Librarian for many years. Jane enjoyed quilting and relished the hunt for the right fabrics and design. She made close to 300 quilts, many of which were gifted to family and friends, and even served as a fundraiser for the Lake Ann Home Coming Days.Other than quilting, Jane liked to travel and was known as a "Great Game Player". She will fondly be remembered as "Aunt Jane" to many of the children in the Lake Ann area. She adored children and the many kid-friendships she developed.Jane is survived by her children, Andrea Joy (Larry) Kelly, of Portage, and John William (Sharon) Nelson, of Scotts; grandchild, Susan (Steve) LaFountain, of Portage; great-grandchildren, Tabitha (Daniel) George, Alicia Yoder, Ryan Yoder and Tyler Yoder; step grandchildren, Mandy (Therron) Kokales and their children, Regena and Belle, Derek, Schan and Terry Weisman and their children; and one great-great-grandchild, Spencer; siblings, Clara Nell Estep, of Marian, Va.; and Ole (Helen) White, of Lake Ann; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, Jane was also preceded in death by a grandchild, James Lee Acha; half-brother, James White; and half-sisters, Nellie Thirlby, Bessie White and Esther Morse.Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m., where the Nelson family will receive friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with the Rev. Justin Grimm officiating. Burial will take place at Solon Township Cemetery. In remembrance of Jane, memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice House, Lake Ann Historical Society or to the Lake Ann Township Park Fund.
