TRAVERSE CITY — Jane Keegstra Patterson, 91, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law.Born Jane Marie Vlack on Monday, June 16, 1919, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Honey (Winnie) and William Vlack, and was later adopted by her step-father, Edward Keegstra. Following graduation from high school, Jane furthered her education later in her life at Davenport College, where she studied business.For many years, Jane and her husband, Donald "Pat" Patterson — whom she married Nov. 11, 1939, in Grand Rapids — made their home in Grand Rapids, raising their family. She was very involved in the lives of her children, attending and supporting sporting events, school events and serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother.In the mid 1960s, Jane began a career as a clerk with the Kent County Public Library, retiring as an assistant librarian. After moving to Traverse City with her husband in 1975, she attended Central United Methodist Church and enjoyed participating in Bible study, as well as her membership at the Elks Club and Daisy Chain.Jane had a tremendous love of books and reading, and volunteered at the jail, helping inmates learn to read and enjoy books as well. She also spent many hours volunteering at Munson Medical Center. She and Pat especially enjoyed camping and traveling together. They also found joy in caring for their grandchildren when the need would arise.Jane is remembered by her family as a person with the gift of patience; always found something good in someone; exhibited unconditional love; and was never one to complain. She will also be remembered for her great sense of humor, her strong Christian beliefs and her very generous and giving spirit.Jane is survived by her children, Jim (Jean) Patterson of Traverse City, Mark (Valerie) Patterson of Coopersville and Sue Mitchell of Traverse City. Also surviving are her 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Edward (Nancy) Keegstra of Stevensville; a sister, Patricia (John) Osmer of Grand Rapids; a sister-in-law, Margaret Bouwens of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Pat, in 1997.Memorial services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Central United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dale Ostema officiating.
