Obituary

Janet Louise Jones, 71, of Traverse City, went to be with Jesus on Saturday January 11, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

Janet was born on July 2, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Frank and Phyllis (Dundas) DeFilippo. She grew up in Leelanau County and graduated from Glen Lake Schools in 1971.

A committed member of her community, Janet served as a tax assessor for Glen Arbor Township, Empire Township, and Elmira Township for over 40 years. In addition to her professional work, she also worked at Good Harbor Vineyards and The Homestead Resort, where her strong work ethic was evident. In her spare time, Janet was an active volunteer at Orchard Creek, and loved organizing fundraising banquets. Known for her creative touch, she delighted in decorating and antique collecting.

A woman of deep faith, Janet had a meaningful relationship with Jesus, which guided her life and provided comfort to those around her. She was a cherished member of Fresh Winds Church and carried her faith in her heart every day. Known for her infectious laugh, Janet's warmth and positivity could be felt by everyone she met. She loved celebrating special occasions with phone calls filled with song, and her strawberry jam became a legendary family favorite.

Above all, Janet was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She is survived by her children, Kerri (Jeff) Reed, Andrea (Michelle) Langley, and Ethan (Gina) Jones; her grandchildren, Hunter, Brayden (Bailey), Madison, and Jazmyna; her great-grandson, Beaux; her siblings, Terri DeFilippo, Tony (Missy) DeFilippo, Frances Johnson, and Donna Johnson; as well as many other loving family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Frank and Lee. Janet's kindness, compassion, and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Janet's tradition of calling and singing to her loved ones on holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries was one of her many cherished ways of spreading joy. Her phone calls, filled with laughter and song, brought warmth and happiness to all who received them. Even though she is no longer with us, her family encourages everyone to continue this special tradition in her honor—calling and singing to one another, just as Janet did, to keep her memory and love alive. The family will have private family service at a later time.
