As expressed by family members and friends, Jean was a living example of what it was to be a Christian, a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend. She was always thinking of and caring for others beyond herself. She passed away peacefully on February 3, 2023.
On August 12, 1930, Clarence Wilson and Bernice (Hilditch) Sayles welcomed Jean into this world in North Hornell, New York. Following high school, she graduated from State University of New York with her teaching degree.
She met her husband Tom (from Ml) at a square dance in Bradenton, Florida. They were married in 1955. His career in State Parks had them living in many locations throughout the state.
Her career was in Teaching and being a Church Secretary. Raising her family was always her first priority, but she was always active in church functions. Upon Tom's retirement, they changed careers and worked as volunteers in RVICS (Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service) for 25 years. This service led them to taking two work projects with World Gospel Mission in Kenya, Africa and Honduras, Central America.
Married for 67 years, they raised 3 children, Don, Nancy and Paul.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence "Bud" and Bernice Sayles, a brother, Robert Sayles and their youngest son Paul.
She was blessed to have 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and an unknown number of friends. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
The memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the First Congregational Church at 1 pm. A time for fellowship and light refreshments will follow the service.
Rather than flowers please make any donations to: the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, Hospice of Michigan, or Samaritan's Purse. Thank you.
