Obituary

Jean Ann Horn, age 84, a multi-generation native of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2022.

Jean was born September 10, 1938 to Vernon and Viola (Ludka) Emerson and raised in Traverse City. She was the youngest of Vern and Viola's four children Jack, Dick and Joan, she graduated from St. Francis High School in 1957. On October 26, 1963, after a trip to the west coast, Jean married the love of her life John "Jack" Horn and raised three children in Traverse City. While raising her children, as a stay home mom, Jean provided daycare for children of teachers, allowing for family time when school was out. Jean was involved with the PTA at Willow Hill School and a founding member of the Trojan Soccer Boosters. Jean was proud of her Traverse City heritage and as such, was active in the community as an ambassador for the National Cherry Festival for many years and a volunteer at the Traverse City Visitor Center. She loved kids, hot air balloons, mushroom hunting, crafts and sewing, making many of her children's clothes when they were young. Jean was a Master Gardener who loved spending time creating beautiful landscapes around her home. Christmas was a special time; she took great pleasure in decorating and hosting for the holidays. After retirement, Jack and Jean had many trips traveling the country from Alaska to Maine to Key West while enjoying life and laughter with their friends and growing family.

Jean will be deeply missed by her husband, Jack and children; Greg (Mary) Horn, Amy (Phil) Simon and Nancy (Bill) Thompson all residing in Traverse City, as well as her five grandchildren; Abby (Russell Abbott) Simon, Gracie Simon, Cole Simon, Connor Thompson and Sophia Thompson and two infant great-grandchildren Axton and Arrow Abbot, who she never got to fully enjoy. Jean is also survived by her brother Richard "Dick" Emerson and sister Joan Gary. Jean will also be missed by her lifelong family friends in the Slabtown Neighborhood and the Labor Day Eastport campers.

She is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol, a brother, Jack Emerson, a brother-in-law, Dale Gary and two sisters-in-law, Betty Emerson and Arlene Emerson.

The family would like to extend much gratitude to the staff and care givers at The Grand Traverse Pavilions. In lieu of flowers, please add to your own gardens in memory of Jean.
