TRAVERSE CITY - Joan Marie Zupin, 99, a lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2018 at her home, surrounded by her three children and friend, Linda Forster.
Born on Thursday, May 15, 1919 to the late Deronda "Chum" and Eva (McManus) Crandall, Joan was raised with her two brothers at the family lumber mill in Grawn before moving to Traverse City. Joan attended Traverse City schools, graduating with the Class of 1936 and then attended Davenport School of Business. On Saturday, January 3, 1942, she married Ralph Bert Zupin in the rectory of St. Francis Catholic Church.
In her earlier years, Joan enjoyed helping her brother, Curly Crandall, by doing bookkeeping at his gas station on Eighth Street. Later, Joan worked for the State of Michigan for 20 years , retiring in 1983. A devoted Catholic, Joan was a member of St. Francis Parish for 70 years. She enjoyed sports and always read the sports section first when picking up the paper. She loved playing tennis in her younger days, walking at the Civic Center and the time she spent with her cat, JoJo. Joan will always be remembered for her optimistic view of life which made her a joy to be around.
Joan is survived by her twin daughters, Nancy (Gary) Burmeister of Shelby, Barbara (Tom Gardner) Zupin of Traverse City and a son, John (Joni) Zupin of Golden, CO. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Jane VanderZwaag of Grand Haven, Liz (Don) Nowka of Traverse City, John Stuart Zupin of Ft. Collins, CO and Jocelyn (Traver) Nauslar of Golden, CO. A great-granddaughter, Brynn VanderZwaag of Grand Haven survives as well. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Ralph Crandall Zupin and her brothers Max and Curly Crandall.
Joan's children would like to express a sincere thank you to Heartland Hospice for their exceptional and loving care. They also wish to thank Joan's friends who provided their mom with the ability to enjoy daily outings, including lunch that ended with Leones hot fudge sundaes. XOXO
Visitation for Joan will take place on Sunday, August 19 from 5 until 6:30 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with the rosary being prayed at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Monday, August 20 at St. Francis Catholic Church with visitation 30 minutes prior to the mass. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
