Of Traverse City, Michigan, died peacefully at age 82, on Wednesday March 15, 2017 following a sudden recurrence of cancer. Preceded in death by her parents, Dilmon and Norma Steen, husband of 60 years Alfred Clare, and a brother Dilmon Steen.

She is survived by beloved children Jill of Boynton Beach FL, Scott (Mimi) of Eagan MN, Tom (Jenny) of Beulah MI, Tim of Traverse City, and grandchildren Michael (Katie) Clare, Camille (Eric) Wilkerson, Julia, Kelly, and Kurt Clare.

Joanne was a devoted mother, grandmother, and dear friend to many. Her quick wit, positivity, great stories, and authenticity were loved by everyone who knew her. She was proud of her family and especially her grandchildren who she enthusiastically supported in all of their endeavors.

Through the years, Joanne was involved in many community and cultural activities including Traverse City Elks Lodge, Traverse City Symphony Orchestra (TSO), and multitude of charitable organizations. She was an avid athlete and lover of golf, tennis, sailing and boating on East Bay.

Born on March 28, 1934, and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Joanne was an accomplished swimmer and loved to share stories of her stellar swimming and cheerleading careers as a teen.

Joanne and husband Al created many happy memories in their Birchwood home, where they lived for more than 47 years. Her great sense of humor, selflessness, and kind heart will be missed by all.

Memorial Service and Celebration of Joanne's life will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday March 19, 2017 with visitation one hour prior (at 2:00pm) at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth Street, Traverse City MI 49684. Pastor Chris Lane will officiate.
