TRAVERSE CITY — John "Scotty" Campsie, 94, of New Hampshire and formerly of Traverse City, passed away Dec. 19, 2010, in New Hampshire. Scotty was born Nov. 26, 1917, the son of John and Florence Victoria (Norris) Campsie, of Perth, Scotland. He came to the United States in 1919 at the end of World War I with his family. The family settled in San Francisco, Calif., where Scotty resided until 1941, the start of World War II. In 1944 he married Alice Jo Anne Roosa in Traverse City; she preceded him in death in June of 1985. As a U.S. Naval Reservist, Scotty was called to active duty and served throughout World War II. After receiving flight crew training he was assigned to a squadron flying anti-submarine patrols in the Atlantic and Caribbean. He was later transferred to VJ6 Squadron to perform top secret work involving radio control, pilotless aircraft and guided missiles. At the end of the war he was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station of Traverse City. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he decided to make Traverse City his home. For a short period of time he worked for the City of Traverse City, Department of Public Works. In 1947 he returned to college to compete his education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education, with honors, from Central Michigan University. He later completed the requirements for his Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University. He was an instructor in local public schools until 1961 when he accepted a position with the U.S. Forest Service. Upon retirement in 1981, he returned to Traverse City. In his spare time, Scotty enjoyed hunting and was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Elk Rapids Sportsman's Club. Scotty belonged to numerous civic organizations, including the Bowen Holiday Post #35, American Legion and Allen-Alto Chapter 38 Disabled American Veterans. He was also a life member of Traverse City Lodge #222 F&AM, Traverse City Chapter #102 Royal Arch Masons, Traverse City Commandery #41 Knights of Templar, Cherryland High Twelve Club #400, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the First Congregational Church of Traverse City. Scotty is survived by his dear friend, Katherine O. Egeler, of New Durham, N.H. He is also survived by relatives in California, Michigan, Canada, Scotland, the Republic of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A Masonic candlelight service will be conducted under the auspices of Masonic Lodge #222 at 7 p.m. A memorial service celebrating Scotty's life will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the First Congregational Church. A luncheon will be provided in the Fireside Room for all of his friends and family following the memorial service. Burial will take place at the Roosa family plot in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions in honor of Scotty may be directed to the First Congregational Church, Masonic Building Association, Bowen Holiday Post 35 American Legion or to the Allen-Alto Chapter #38, Disabled American Veterans.
