Rev. Dr. John E. Cermak
NORTHPORT – Rev. Dr. John E. Cermak, age 83, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
John was born to John W. and Frances E. (Middleton) Cermak on January 4, 1934 in Northport, MI. John graduated from Bangor High School and soon went on to graduate from Albion College. John then pursued his eventual lifelong career as a minister by attending seminary school at Boston University's School of Theology. John went on to further his studies in seminary by receiving his Doctorate degree in 1976 from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO.
John met his wife Adele L. Lent, of 63 years while they were both teenagers, and were married on November 21, 1953.
In 1958 John started out his years as a pastor and minister at the Oakwood United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, MI. In 1966 John was then relocated to Okemos, MI where he was the minister at Okemos Community Church for 21 years. After serving in Okemos, John was relocated again to the First United Methodist Church in Jackson, MI for 7 years until his eventual retirement in 1994, where John and Adele moved to Northport, MI.
While in Northport, John was very active in the community, where he continued to assist with funerals and weddings and often was a guest minister at the Trinity United Church.
John was an avid hunter, fisherman, and amateur hobby farmer. He loved working outside with his chainsaw and cutting up wood.
John is survived by his wife, Adele, sons; Douglas (Jane Pearce) Cermak, Onekema, MI, Daniel (Rhonda) Cermak, Parchment, MI, Matt (Kate) Cermak, Interlochen, MI, and his sister Mary Betzoldt, Adrian, MI. John is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for John will take place at the Trinity United Church in Northport on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 am.
