LEELANAU COUNTY — John D. Fourne, 84, of Leelanau County, passed away Dec. 29, 2011, at his home. John was born on July 30, 1927, in Detroit, to the late Gordon Stanley Fourne and Janet Brown. On Aug. 16, 1944, John enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a seaman and a machinist at the Great Lakes Station in Illinois, Ft.Pierce in Florida, aboard the U.S.S. Hanover and the U.S.S. Egeria. On July 1, 1946, he was honorably discharged. After returning from his time in the service, John married the late Joanne Gotts. He was employed as a carpenter and helped construct several of the bridges and roads along I-96. He retired in the 1980s and moved to Leelanau County. In his spare time, John enjoyed tending to his flowers, carpentry and having conversations with his neighbors. John is survived by his children, Penny Fourne, of Traverse City, Margaret Fourne, of Albany, Ore., John Douglass Fourne, of Waverly, Ohio, Tina Fourne, of Farmington Hills, and Judy Myers, of Oscoda; and grandchildren, Katie Tigges, of Traverse City, Jacob and Joanne Fourne, of Farmington Hills, and Kyle Douglas Myers, of Oscoda; and sister, Claudia Lantto of Milford. John was preceded in death by his daughters, Jennette Fourne and Trudy Fourne. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
