John Thomas Hentschel, 80, lifelong resident of Traverse City passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024 at his home.
John was born on September 16, 1943 to the late Thomas John and Betty Marie (Mackey) Hentschel.
He graduated from Traverse City High School in 1961 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1962. He served our country honorably for 3 years and was discharged in 1965.
On June 8, 1963, he married his best friend, Bonnie Gae Ryon.
John and his father owned and operated Hentschel Amusements from 1965-1971. He then became a bus driver for 32 years for TCAPS. In 1984, he then started Hentco, a tennis court maintenance company that he owned and operated with his sons Tom and Scott. They celebrated 40 years in business this year. In his free time, he enjoyed watching car races, fishing, hunting, camping and traveling.
John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Linda, daughter-in-law Tammy and granddaughter Amber.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Bonnie; their sons Thomas Hentschel and Scott (Dawn) Hentschel; grandchildren Ashly, Amanda, Meranda, Aubree, Kortnie, Corey, Allyson and Alexander; 13 great grandchildren; and sisters Nancy (Don) Draper, Diana Ealy and Melanie (Ken) Lampel.
The celebration of John's life will take place on Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Cherryland VFW. Military honors will begin at 3 pm followed by a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the VFW.
