John K. Kerridge, 66, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly from complications related to diabetes in California on December 29, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 8, 1958, in Jackson, Michigan, to the late George and Margaret Kerridge, John lived a life marked by adventure, creativity, and a passion for learning. From family ski trips to Vail and Aspen, to co-piloting a plane to the Bahamas with his father, to guiding River Rafts down the Colorado, John was always in search of the next thrilling experience. His adventurous spirit extended to his professional and personal pursuits, reflecting his boundless energy and love for the world around him.
John's work ethic was forged early in life, rising before dawn for swim practice and later earning medals as a dedicated swimmer. His summers spent at his grandparent's cottage on Lake Leelanau, swimming, waterskiing, and fishing, nurtured his deep connection to the water. After graduating from Kirkwood High School in Missouri in 1976, John spent a year evangelizing on the streets of Germany with his guitar before pursuing a degree in Architecture. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Washington and a Master's in Architecture from Lawrence Technological University.
A man of immense talent and a gentle spirit, John spent much of his career designing and building spaces that blended beauty and functionally. He held positions at GBKB Architects, Bay Shores Construction and later founding his own Design/Build firm. His most proud accomplishments included the "corner" buildings that can still be found throughout Traverse City. John ultimately joined Paul Maurer General Contracting, where he brought a blend of design and practicality in his roles of Project Support, Client Development and Estimating while maintaining his architectural practice. A licensed and certified LEED AP Architect Professional and Certified Graduate Builder, John also served as a past President of the Northern Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and as a State Director of AIA Michigan.
Beyond his professional life, John was a gifted watercolor artist, capturing the beauty of nature and the world around him. He spent many weekends at his wife Brenda's family estate in the Upper Peninsula, where he was known for his storytelling, great cooking, and infectious energy. He cherished his time on Whitefish Bay, always the life of the party around the campfire with a drink and cigar in hand. John loved golf, ski trips, and spent many hours walking the Indian Trail to his hunting blind.
John's spiritual journey was deeply important to him, ignited by Monsignor Edwin Thome, who welcomed him into the Catholic Church. Then a member of St. Joseph Parish, John contributed to the early design stages of the church. He made his "Cursillo" in 2001 and later played music in this ministry. He also supported St. Francis School, especially the football program and High School Chapel. John cherished his role as a father and grandfather, lovingly called "Papa John". His proudest moments came when his son, Dr. William Kerridge, earned his medical degree, and when his son, Joseph, became captain of the University of Michigan Football Team—Go Blue!
Never leaving his wife behind, John traveled across the country to attend his sons' Michigan and NFL football tailgates and games, creating lasting friendships and cherished memories. He also looked forward to Spring Break trips to the warm waters of Florida and summers on East Bay with family and friends boating, always embracing the joy of time spent together. With vigor and conviction for his political beliefs, John was always ready for a lively discussion—whether at the boardroom table at Nolan's or around the dinner table at home.
A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, John's family was the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Brenda; sons Dr. William (Marie Mann) Kerridge of Santa Rosa, California, and Joseph Kerridge of San Diego, California; grandsons George and Charles, and granddaughter Lillian; his sister Kathy (Dan) Morgan; brothers Mark (Stephanie) Kerridge and Paul (Denise) Kerridge; and many cherished Sister and Brother In-Laws, nieces and nephews.
John's heart was always open to helping others and empowering them. His favorite charity, Heifer International, reflects these beliefs. Memorial Contributions may be directed to this organization.
