In Loving Memory of John (Jack) R. Leishman
June 7, 1945 – May 8, 2025

The world lost a brilliant mind, generous heart, and kind soul with the passing of John (Jack) R. Leishman on May 8, 2025. Born to John R. and Mabel L. Leishman in Cheboygan, Michigan on June 7, 1945, Jack left every life he touched a little brighter. His own life was characterized by his strong family ties, an adventurous spirit, and an unwavering commitment to family and friends.

Jack's early years were filled with happy memories of outdoor adventures and the warmth of close-knit family gatherings. That strong foundation remained central throughout his life. He shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sue, and together they raised two children, Fred (Tammy) and Theresa (Leonard), Jack was a proud grandfather to Mikayla (Devin), McKenzie (Tristan), Anais, Freya (Caleb), and Madison (Ryan), and great-grandfather to Benjamin. His love for his family was fierce, unconditional, and unwavering.

An adventurer at heart and a craftsman by nature, Jack found joy and purpose in the outdoors and in the art of making things work. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, pilot, boater, and shooting sports enthusiast. He also held a lifelong passion for amateur radio, proudly operating under the call sign K8XX.

Jack earned his degree in Trade Technical Education from Ferris State College in 1967 before starting his career as an Associate Design Engineer for Heathkit. He spent the next chapter of his life mentoring young minds, dedicating 27 years to teaching Electronics at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. Beyond the classroom, Jack continued to share his expertise as a contract radio engineer for local stations, never ceasing to build, repair, or inspire.

There wasn't much Jack couldn't fix. His passion for building and fixing things was evident in all aspects of his life, from his early days of tinkering with radios to his successful career as a teacher and business owner. An able electrician, carpenter, and repairer of mechanical things, Jack lent his ability to solve problems through his eagerness to help others. Jack was the one people called—and he always showed up.

Jack was a man of deep faith and strong convictions. He was a devoted husband and father and loyal friend to many. His friends have said they loved talking with him, that he could talk to anyone about anything, and that he always made them feel welcome. He had a collection of one-of-a-kind items that were used as decorations and conversation pieces. He was a gifted writer and would often write about what was on his mind. He served his community with great pride, most notably as a VFW Honor Guard and Chaplain, honoring the service and memory of veterans. He had a quick wit, warm smile, and a rare ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Jack's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy of excellence, integrity, and compassion lives on in the countless lives he touched. His was a life well-lived and deeply loved. He will be missed beyond measure, remembered always, and honored forever.

A celebration of life is being planned for late summer, date to be announced.
