John Bernard Schroeder, age 73, died at home as a result of kidney cancer on January 26, 2024 in Traverse City, MI.
John was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 28, 1950 to Margie (Buhl) Schroeder and Carl Michael Schroeder. He is survived by his wife, Valary (Hammond) Schroeder of Traverse City, MI, his children, Pedro Garrett of Ann Arbor, MI, Gina Meno of Interlochen, MI, Chelsea Banton of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Justin Schroeder of Traverse City, MI and his siblings, Martha Schroeder of Lincoln, CA, Michael Schroeder of St. Petersburg, FL, Anne Slusser of Albany, NY, and Theresa Wyant of Midland, MI. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren.
John graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1968 and the University of Michigan undergraduate school and U of M medical school in 1979. After medical school he did a residency in Midland, MI. After completing his residency and working a few years in the Midland family practice residency program, he worked as an emergency room physician, first in Midland and later in Traverse City at Munson Medical Center. He retired from practicing medicine in 2015.
During his time in the emergency department, he served as Chief of Emergency Medical Services and on many committees. He was instrumental in the design and development of the new emergency facility at Munson Medical Center.
After retirement, he and Valary spent winters at their home in Goodyear, AZ with many lifelong friends from college and summers at their home in Shanty Creek, MI on the Cedar River golf course where he enjoyed his favorite sport with a wonderful group of fellow players.
Per John's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial gathering will take place next summer. Details are yet to be determined.
