TRAVERSE CITY - Jon Carl Reckeweg "Jon Patrick" or "JP", 67, passed away on July 16, 2015 on his deck overlooking his beloved Silver Lake in Traverse City, MI.
He was born in Fort Wayne, IN on December 27, 1947 to Carl and Virginia Reckeweg. After graduating from Columbia City High School, he joined the US Navy and served in Vietnam on the U.S.S. Kittyhawk.
He came to Traverse City in 1978 and started at WTCM Radio as a disc jockey before moving into sales and retiring from his position as National Sales Manager in 2013. He was also "the voice of Traverse City sports" having announced high school basketball and football games for 21 years.
Throughout his life he enjoyed watching and playing sports. He was a huge Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Pistons fan. He was an avid softball player, bowler, and golfer. Friends and family will remember him for his gregarious personality and quick wit. He was proud of his 300 game in bowling and having participated in the 1961 National Spelling Bee at age 13.
More than anything, he was proud of his two daughters, Dawn Gle (Doug) of Traverse City, MI and Brianna Zamborsky (Trevor) of Ferndale, MI and his grandchildren Carter, Brady, and Megan Gle, and Helen Zamborsky. He was predeceased by both parents.
The memorial service will be held on July 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff 305 Sixth Street Traverse City, MI 49684. The visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to the time of service.
