Joseph Oscar Loney, 92, of Grawn, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025.
Joe was born on September 15, 1932, in Manton, Michigan, to the late Helmer Daniel and Etta Martha (Jensen) Loney. He attended school in Manton and graduated with the Class of 1950. It was during those early years that he met and fell in love with Caroline Mary Rogers. After high school, Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably in Korea for two years. Upon returning home, he married Caroline on November 14, 1954. Together, they built a beautiful life full of love, laughter, and family.
Joe dedicated over 44 years of service to the Traverse City Record-Eagle, retiring in 1994. In addition to his career, he selflessly served his community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with Blair Township. Whenever the call came, Joe never hesitated—he was always ready to help others in their time of need. His compassion and commitment were unwavering.
A true craftsman, Joe had a deep passion for woodworking. He remodeled their home by hand, built kitchen cabinets, and even crafted the dresser that still stands in their bedroom. He could fix or build just about anything. Joe and Caroline loved working side by side in the yard, and he always found joy in gardening, camping, fishing, and traveling to visit family in Missouri, Ohio, Arizona, and New York.
Joe was the kind of person who showed up, gave generously, and lived with heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joe is survived by his wife Caroline of over 70 devoted years; children Virginia (Douglas) Wisniewski, Suzanne (Ken) Kiley, Carol Reiss, Michael (Reba) Loney, Steven (Merrill Smith) Loney; grandchildren, Megan (Blake) Rumbach, Amanda Loney, Jackson Loney, Josh Loney, Michael Summers, Nicholas (Laura) Summers, Julane (Brad) Spencer, Matt Wiggins; great grandchildren Mary Summers, Daniel and Kari Rumbach; his brother Alfred (Susie) Loney, his sister-in-law Christine Loney and many other loving family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Lucy, Daniel, Patricia, Orman and Ellen.
