TRAVERSE CITY — Joseph L. Poole, age 90, formerly of Traverse City, died July 24, 2011, at the Iosco Medical Care Facility in East Tawas.Joe was born on Feb. 16, 1921, in Jasper, Ga. He was the son of Joseph G. and Pearl (Wiggington) Poole. On Feb. 12, 1950, in Monroe, he married Marianne Milhuka, who preceded him in death.Joe lived in Traverse City since 1963 when he was stationed here with the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1966 after 28 years of service to his country. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Traverse City Elks Club and was an avid golfer at the Traverse City Country Club. He was a true southern gentleman.Surviving are a daughter, Roseann (Jim) Russo, of Tawas; five grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Russo, Steven (Jill) Russo, Anne (Tim) Blackmore, Amy (Vincent) Perciaccante and Sarah Knotts; 13 great-grandchildren, Danielle and Zachary Stringer, Keenan Blackmore, Erica, Hannah and Alysse Russo, Jack, Haley and Somer Russo, Antonia and Dominic Perciaccante, and Lillian and Isabella Knotts.Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m., with a scripture service at 7 p.m., in the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m., in St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City, with the Rev. Fr. Kenneth Stachnick officiating.
