TRAVERSE CITY — Joseph Lyle "Joe" Powell, 73, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.Joe was born Aug.17, 1938, in San Diego, Calif., to the late Oren M. and Alma E. (Gardner) Powell.On Nov. 8, 1937, Joe entered into marriage with Harriet Theresa Mathews. Joe and Harriet made their home in Traverse City and have been residents since 1972.Joe was in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years. He retired as E8 and managed the exchange. Joe loved hunting for gophers and anything else he could find. He was a talented fisherman and even tied his own flies. He fished for bass, trout and perch. Winning the lottery was always a goal for Joe.Joe will be remembered as a loving husband, great father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.Joe is survived by his daughters, Theresa Powell, of Traverse City, Rochelle "Shelly" Powell and life partner, Edwinna Hyde, of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Joy (Paul) Enterline, Matt (Heather Dixon) VanderMey and Tom VanderMey; great-granddaughter, Kayleigh VanderMey; a brother, Gary (Gwenth) Powell; and many other loving friends and family members.Visitation for Joe will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the funeral home, with a visitation held one hour prior.Memorial contributions may be directed to Cherryland Humane Society.Please sign Joe's online guestbook at
