TRAVERSE CITY — Joseph Lindsay Sloan II, 25, of Traverse City, died Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 2011, at his home. Born Oct. 23, 1985, in Traverse City, he was the son of Joseph Lindsay and Jeanne Lee (Stump) Sloan. Joe graduated from St. Francis High School with the class of 2004. He furthered his education by attending and later graduating from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Political Science. While attending college, Joe was involved with several activist groups.His greatest passions were music (playing the guitar and piano), sports (especially the Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Lions) and politics (working toward a more just society).Joe is survived by his parents; mother, Jeanne Sloan; father, Joseph L. (Loretta) Sloan; brother, Gerard Sloan; stepsister, Angela Boger; stepbrother, Ryan Boger, all of Traverse City; maternal grandmother, Eunice Fenton, of Jackson; paternal grandmother, Shirley Sloan, of Birmingham; special friends, Caleb and Liberty Richardson, of Grand Rapids, Matt and Courtney Hanley, of Chicago, Jacob Preston, of Traverse City, and Ken Srdjak, of Washington, D.C.; special great-aunt, Joan Sage, of Livonia; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Lee Stump and Gerard Sloan; along with a special great-uncle, Frank Sage; and cousins, Mary Anne Sage and Paul Sage.A private family gathering will take place.
