Joseph Leroy Strang, 78, of Traverse City , passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at his home in Traverse City.
Joe was born on Saturday, January 19, 1935 to the late Frank and Lucy (Davis) Strang in Traverse City. He married the former Pearl Gates on Friday, December 7, 1962 in Traverse City. He served our country as a member of the U. S. Army and later as a member of the Army Reserves.
A gifted upholsterer, Joe worked for many years for Riehl Upholstery as well as working on his own. He enjoyed camping, gardening and watching birds, but especially enjoyed polka with his wife Pearl. Joe had been a member of the Eagles as well as Cherryland VFW Post 2780.
Joe is survived by his sons, Timothy (Janean) Strang of Traverse City, Russell (Holly) Strang of Tollesboro, KY; grandchildren, Crystal, Carrie, Candie, TJ, Kayla and Karly; 8 great grandchildren; brothers, Amil (Ellen) Strang of Buckley, Donald (Mary) Strang of Kingsley, sisters, Joyce Maidens of Traverse City, Marion Madison of Iowa, Janet (Ronald) Baerlocher of Roscommon, Donna (Murl) Evans of Lansing, Dorothy Weiler of Traverse City and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends Nancy Kolodziej of Traverse City and Lori Brock of Gaylord. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl in 1984, by his sisters Opal Turner, Florence Burton, Frances Lewis and brothers Frank Strang, and Glen Strang.
The memorial service for Joe will take place at 11 AM Monday, June 17 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with interment following at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society.
