Joyce Ann Coffey, 84, of Traverse City passed away peacefully on March 19, 2022 surrounded by her family.
Joyce was born in Akron, Ohio, the eldest of two children of Martin and Ann Posavac. Joyce enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up with her sister Carol, helping out at her Dad's gas station, and singing in her church's choir. After high school, Joyce worked as a secretary before marrying her childhood friend, Gene Coffey, in 1960. In the early years of their long life together they had two children, Jill and Kevin. In 1967, the family moved to Traverse City, Michigan. Joyce helped her husband start the family plumbing and heating company out of their home doing the business bookkeeping until retiring with Gene.
She was a devoted Christian, using her bookkeeping skills in her treasury position at Christ's Ecumenical Church. Later as a member of the Presbyterian Church, Joyce played piano for residents at assisted living facilities and was a member of Stephen Ministry, providing Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties.
Above all things, Joyce loved being a wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She was always there for her family and truly had a heart of gold. She loved to cook and bake – pies with homemade pie crust, carrot cake, and seven-layer cookies were amongst her specialties and loved by all! She spent endless hours every sunny, summer day watching her children, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and neighborhood kids play in the family's pool.
Joyce joined her beloved husband Gene in heaven after celebrating 61 years of marriage together. Joyce is survived by her daughter Jill Champt, and son Kevin and his wife Theresa; sibling, Carol Godt; three grandsons, Brent and his wife Ashley, Tyler and his wife Natasha, and Blake; great grandson, Cooper and several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren. Joyce will be laid to rest at Memorial Gardens in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City Stephen Ministries fund.
