Joyce Emerson, 89, of Traverse City, passed away March 9, 2012, at Country Pleasures.
Joyce was born on May 28, 1922, in Holton, the daughter of R. Austin and Neva (Kempf) Murphy. On Feb. 9, 1957, Joyce married William J. Emerson in Holton.
Joyce loved to play Scrabble, cribbage and several other card games. In her spare time Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, birdwatching and gardening. In later years she also enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and following their games with her grandkids.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Kenneth) Selden, of Spring Arbor, Janet (Patrick) Roskelley, of Traverse City, and Barbara (David) Burgess, of Kalamazoo; and grandchildren, Michael Roskelley, Susan Roskelley and Daniel Selden.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Emerson; her son, Paul Emerson; and her parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church. Dr. Gary Hogue will lead the service of remembrance. She will be interred at the Church Remembrance Garden following the service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to First Congregational Church or to the American Diabetes Association.
