Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Joyce F. Maher, 83, of Traverse City, formerly of Birmingham, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011.Joyce was born on Jan. 23, 1928, to the late George and Ruperta (McCormick) Campau in Detroit. After graduating from Visitation High School and Mercy College she enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a registered nurse in San Diego, Calif., and Key West, Fla., until she was honorably discharged in May 1953. She married the late Joseph F. Maher DDS in 1953 and together they raised their family in Birmingham and spent their summers at the "cottage" on Torch Lake.She is survived by her children, Mary Ann (Greg) Edgin, Pat (David) Drake, Judy (Ralph) Balestriere, Jeanne Maher and Kathy (Andy) Dwan; and her grandchildren, Nicholas (Andrea), Kelly (Frank), Laura (fiancé Ian), Joe, Julia, Paul, Kathleen, Andrew, Mary Katherine, Molly and Meghan; and great-grandson Sam. She also is survived by her sister Jeanne (Robert) Toohey and her sisters-in-law Nancy Campau, Jeanne Maher and Margaret (John) Gnau.The family will receive friends at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St. in Traverse City, today, Oct. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. Fr. Patrick Maher will serve as celebrant. Burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery.In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Munson Hospice or the Veterans Administration Clinic/Hospital or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.Please visit www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com to share your thoughts and memories with the family at Joyce's online guestbook.
