Obituary

OLD MISSION — Julianne Elizabeth (nee Myer) Meyer died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.Julianne was born on July 9, 1927, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the daughter of Delbert and Anna (Nelson) Myer. She attended Wittenberg University and was a graduate of Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, with a B.S. degree.On Dec. 27, 1950, she married Charles R. Meyer in New Philadelphia. She accompanied her husband, a U.S. Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Diplomatic Corps, to various posts: Vietnam, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Argentina and Spain. She taught school in New Philadelphia; Silver Spring, Md.; Quito, Ecuador; Saigon, Vietnam; the Canal Zone and in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she was acknowledged as a master teacher. While living in Panama, she was on the Board of Directors for the National Museum of Panama.Upon the retirement of her husband, they settled in Old Mission, where she became active in the Old Mission Women's Club, the Congregational Church and the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society. She also was associated with the Peninsula Township government for a number of years and volunteered at Munson Hospital in the escort service. She played an important part in the establishment of the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society and wrote several books on the history of the area.Julianne was instrumental in saving and the reconstruction of the Joseph Hessler log home, which is now located at Lighthouse Park at the tip of the Peninsula; it has been renovated and is on the State Register of Historic Sites.Julianne is survived by her husband Charles; her daughter Susan (Steve) Thompson, of Lexington, N.C.; grandson Owen Meyer, of Traverse City; her daughter-in-law Leah Meyer, of Traverse City; her sister, Mary Frances Mathias, of Tavares, Fla.; and her sisters-in-law Nan Ferguson, of Traverse City, and Trudy Myer, of Nevada.She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles R Meyer III; a brother, Nelson Myer; and a sister, Delaine Myer. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, with visitation one hour prior, at Old Mission Congregational Church 18687 Mission Road, Old Mission, with a reception to follow at the church. The Rev. Peter Shumar will officiate. Memorial donations can be directed to the church. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
