June Iris Neal's Obituary
June Iris Neal, 85 of Traverse City passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025.
June was born on January 7, 1940 in Grand Rapids to the late Maurice and Helen (Crowley) Mead.
She earned her bachelors and master's degrees in education from Western Michigan University. She went on to a successful career as a beloved teacher than spanned 34 years; 25 of which were spent in Traverse City.
June loved the Old Town Play House and earned a spot in their Hall of Fame. She began volunteering in the 1970s adding up to over 50 years of dedication. Producing was her passion. In the early 90s, when the Traverse City Children's Theatre (now: Young Company) became housed at OTP, she began working almost exclusively with our youth actors. Eventually growing to full-time to manage the Young Company. June developed the first youth camps ever held at OTP, starting with bringing in the Missoula Children's Program until she figured out how we could do it in-house. It's important to note that June did all of this for no pay and mostly with a smile upon her face.
The Unity Spiritual Center of Traverse City was near and dear to her heart. She valued acceptance, inclusion, stewardship, love, and a need to grow and learn on her faith journey. This was a perfect path for her.
She was also active in the Quota Club.
She will be remembered for hosting family and friends and always planning the next meal.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Helen, brother Norris Mead, sister Joan Peterson, brother-in-law Donald Peterson, niece Linda and her husband John Collins, and great nephew Danny Collins.
June is survived by her sister-in-law Jean Mead, nephews David (Jenny) Mead, Larry Peterson (Terry), Mike Peterson (Teri), niece Amy Peterson, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
The memorial service celebrating her life will take place at Unity Spiritual Center of Traverse City, in May, 2026.
