Obituary

Traverse City - Kenneth Blair Gum, MD, 64, passed away on July 24, 2023.

Ken was born on September 12, 1958, in Winter Haven, Florida, to the late Stanford "Bayard" and Glendoline "Sue" Gum (Wilfong).

He was raised in Oscoda, Michigan, where he excelled in sports and academics, graduating valedictorian from Oscoda Area High School in 1976. Ken earned a full-ride scholarship and graduated from Oakland University.

In his thirst for knowledge, he earned his Medical Degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1984. As a highly regarded ophthalmologist, Ken touched the lives of many patients across the Midwest. He owned and operated Traverse City Eye with care, generosity, and remarkable skill.

Beyond his vast professional achievements, Ken was a prolific writer, flyfisherman, and bird hunter - always enjoying the companionship of his beloved bird dogs. He played multiple musical instruments and, at one time, was in a band.

He was actively involved in civic organizations, showing his love for the community he cherished. He co-founded the Adam's Chapter of Trout Unlimited, leaving a lasting impact on nature.

As an outdoorsman, Ken traveled extensively. He found solace at Camp Ginger Quill, a historic fly fishing lodge located on the Holy Waters of the Au Sable River, where he spent numerous years as a cherished member. Here, he immersed himself in nature, reading by the fire, watching trout rise, and bonding with fellow members.

Above all else, Ken treasured his family. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, their children Zane and Zoe, his sister Dana Wright and her husband Jim, in-laws Neil and Bobbie Akey, and several beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ken was called away too soon. He led a tremendously full and varied life, leaving behind a legacy of love and memories that will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched.

In his memory, let us honor Kenneth Blair Gum and celebrate the richness he brought to our lives. May his spirit of curiosity, passion for nature, and dedication to community inspire us to make the world a better place. Rest in peace, dear Ken. You will be missed deeply.
