TRAVERSE CITY — Lanta Lavina Tafelsky, 103, a retired secretary and bookkeeper, of Traverse City, died Thursday evening, June 30, 2011, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.Born April 28, 1908, in Bingham Township, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Mary (Send) Wilson, who were both pioneer families of Leelanau County. On June 1, 1935, in Traverse City, she married Joseph Tafelsky, who preceded her in death.Lanta was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Through the years she served as a board member of the East Traverse Catholic Credit Union.She was formerly employed by Acmeline Manufacturing Company and retired in 1973 from Hibbard Funeral Chapel and Flower Shop after 15 years of dedicated employment.With her tender heart and gentle spirit, Lanta touched the lives of many. Lanta is survived by her caring sons, Theodore "Ted" Tafelsky, of Grandville, and Gary Tafelsky, of Caledonia; five grandchildren, Tad Tafelsky, Tori (Jeff) Edgell, Aaron Tafelsky, Steven (Holly) Tafelsky and Kevin (Allyson) Tafelsky; 10 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Kay (Bill) Myers, of Suttons Bay; along with other dear and caring nieces, nephews and neighbors.In addition to her husband, Lanta was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Cathy; and her siblings, Herbert Wilson, Wanda Youker and Elizabeth Strutz.Friends are welcomed to visit with the family at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday, July 7, 2011, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Kenneth Stachnik will serve as the celebrant. Burial will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance of Lanta, memorials may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
